ALTUN HA

The Altun Ha Archaeological Reserve is located about 31 miles away from Belize City, in a small village in Belize called Rockstone Pond.
The site covers an area of about 5 miles (8 km) square. The central square mile of the site has remains of some 500 structures. Visitors can climb the Temple of Masonry Altars one of the major ruins which rises about 54ft from the plaza or you can hike up the Temple A-6. A climb to the top of the temple provides an excellent view of the entire site.
The largest of Altun Ha’s temple-pyramids, the “Temple of the Masonry Altars”, is 54 feet (16 m) high. A drawing of this structure is the logo of Belize’s leading brand of beer, “Belikin”.

Spanning a 25 square mile, Altun Ha is made up of two central plazas surrounded by towering temples that enclose the palm strewn land. Jade, jewelry, flints and skins are among the three hundred remnants.

While traversing the many little creeks and lagoons, you’ll likely encounter, hawks, kites and Falcons. You may also see Dinty Jackana lightly walking on Lili pads while the crocodiles bask in the morning sunlight. While touring this site huge masks depicting dead rulers and gods seem to materialize out of the rain forest amid the chatter of birdlife and the haunting call of the Howler Monkeys.
